How to Create a Music Video
article by Sturat Mitchel
Music videos are short films or videos that accompany a song or a piece of music. The origin came from the 1920’s, where a series of black and white short films were created for all kinds of entertainers, whether they are dancers, singers, or people who played musical instruments. At a later stage, music was put together with animation.
Society has come a long way from the black and white short musical films. Not only is there animation, there is colour films, live action, documentaries, and other video styles Nowadays, it is used widespread as a promotion and marketing tool to assist in the sale of music recordings. A good video can greatly assist in the sale of a recording of a really average song, because people love the film clips. Besides, if a band had a terrible film clip, it would be embarassing for them and damage their reputation.
So, if you are just starting out and want to create music videos for your band, here are some ideas:
Firstly, you will need to put together a team of a cinematographer (ie someone who is holding the video camera), you or your band, and a person for the lighting (if necessary). You may also need to borrow, buy, or rent equipment such as the video camera or tape.
Secondly, come up with an angle and perhaps even draw storyboards that are both realistic and satisfy everyone. The worst thing is to show lack of chemistry between you and your team in the video!
If a recording of your band playing live is what you are after in your video, keep in mind that you may suffer loss of quality as sometimes it is difficult to capture the correct noise and moment without disturbing other fans and the band members. Editing the video may help in correcting this.
After the video has been completed, you can market it on video sharing websites or social networking websites to help promote yourself or your band. Good luck on creating your next music videos!
